How to model an armchair with SUbD - Sketchup tutorial

Follow
Sketchup Style

Today we're going to model an armchair, or as some like to call it, a sofa. I always create my designs first on paper, but once I transfer the ideas into sketchup, the design often evolves, sometimes changing considerably.

Plugins I use in this video are:

Curviloft
FredoScale (for editing the armrest)
Vertex Tools (for proportional editing)
Quadface tools (to model with quads and UV mapping)
SUbD (subdivision surface)
Mirror
Lines to Tubes (to create the stitching)
Vray for Sketchup

This video is a part of the 3D concept furniture series. If you want to check out the rest of the series, click here:    • 3D Concept Furniture

If you want to follow along with all the steps, and recreate this exact model yourself, I suggest you set the speed of the video to 0,25. That way you can follow the tutorial with no problem. But If you’re just here for the speed build timelapse, just sit back and enjoy the video as is, or you can even double the speed.

In the lower left corner of your screen you can see what I’m typing and what each shortcut stands for, but beware, I don’t use Sketchup default shortcuts as you’ll probably notice, so I’ll list all my custom shortcuts bellow.

Shortcuts:
Ctrl+1 Select tool
Ctrl+Q Draw line
Shift+A Draw arc
Ctrl+W Mirror tool (plugin)
Ctrl+Shift+X Move tool
Ctrl+Shift+A Offset tool
Ctrl+R (or R) Rotate tool
Alt+Y Hidden geometry (on/off)
Ctrl+D Tape measure
S Scale tool
E Eraser
C Draw circle
Y Draw rectangle
V Paint bucket (Alt Eyedrop tool)
A Push pull

The rendering is done with Vray plugin for sketchup, but I keep it extremely simple. I just decrease the intensity of the light, increase the size of the sun to get that soft shadows effect and work around the diffuse and bump map of the wood and fabric material.
