Materials Needed
Scrap gold
graphite crucible
Flux (borax or a commercial flux)
Tongs or heatresistant gloves
Heat source (propane gas torch or furnace capable of reaching gold's melting point of 1,948°F/1,064°C)
Steps
Sort and clean the scrap gold thoroughly to remove any nonmetallic items like plastic or stones.
Place the clean scrap gold pieces into the crucible. Add a small amount of flux, which will help collect oxide impurities that rise to the top as slag.
Maintain temperature just above the melting point.
Once fully melted, skim off any flux slag or oxidized impurities from the top with heatresistant tongs.
Allow it to cool completely before handling.
Safety Notes
Use proper ventilation as gold releases fumes when melted.
Wear heatresistant gloves and eye protection.
Have a fire extinguisher suitable for metal fires nearby.
