If you're into making furniture or just wish to refinish a project, this natural stain will do an effective job at a fraction of the cost!

Now that you've harvested your black walnuts, you'll want to start by dehusking them. Be sure to wear gloves as this can get pretty messy. One by one, peel off the husk and set it aside in a large 5gallon bucket. You can also set aside the walnuts to be cleaned for food or they can be composted much to the squirrel's delight.

After you've dehusked your walnuts and the bucket is fairly full, add just enough water to fill it level with the husk.

Using a durable stirring rod, the husk is mixed thoroughly, breaking up as much large pieces as possible.

Next place and old shirt over the top and secure with a bungee or string.

Keeping out of the rain this will be allowed to decompose for the next few weeks.

At this point it has become a thick syrup. With the shirt secured on top the stain is poured into a smaller container straining out all the large pieces.

To store it, mix the stain with a 1:1 ratio of rubbing alcohol and place it in a tightly sealed container. The rubbing alcohol will help the effectiveness of the stain and can be stored for years!
