How to make a medieval Great helmet (part 2/2)

In this DIY armor making / armoring tutorial I’ll show you how to make a templar / great helm inspired helmet which is a classic piece of medieval armor.

This armoring tutorial shows you how to make the lower part and the cross for the helmet.

Of all the medieval armors, a Great helm is an easy armoring project to begin with, if you want to learn how to make a medieval helmet. It's fairly commonly suggested for beginners of armor making. It's also a good start for any other diy armoring projects.

Medieval armor is quite vast concept and so there are many variations of great helm too. Some of them had a flap top but in this tutorial I made it with a small dome shape. I also wanted the cross that goes across the helmet to really stand out, so I made a brass cover for it.

Note that you have to draw the top "dome" part like I did in the video to assure it fits with the others. That's why I didn't upload that part (and I've lost the pattern anyway so...) Also I've lost the template for the cross but it's the easiest part so you can be creative with it. I did add the measurements of my cross though. Same goes with the holes in the front, you can make different shapes to make your helmet unique. I hope these help, for any questions just ask in the comments!

This armoring project was one of my first one so I used 2 mm to learn how to work with thick steel. This helmet is a bit heavier than the average medieval helmet was. Although some could have been even thicker in some points.

You can use any thickness you like. If it's your first time making armors I suggest using 1 1,5 mm steel. You can also use different thickness on different parts like they did in those days. The skull and front part could be quite thick but the rest don't have to.
