Billy Gibson, service tech from our Colton Service department, shares how to maintenance RV Batteries in a safe and effective way. By keeping the maintenance on your batteries up to date, you potentially prolong your battery life, which in turn can save you money.

First of all, make sure to wear safety glasses because the maintenance involves battery acid.

There are two types of RV Batteries that are both considered to be wet cells. You can recognize whether a battery is a 12 volt or a 6 volt by taking off the caps and counting the number of cells. A 12 volt battery will have 6 cells (2 volts a piece) whereas a 6 volt battery has 3 cells (used in a combination of 2 volts each to create a total of 12 volts).
In the top of each battery will be a protrusion into the gravity itself. When you are filling your batter, you want to fill it up right to the bottom of the protrusion. You want to always use distilled water in your batteries because regular tap water will have chemicals, solids and other minerals that you don't want introduced into your battery.

You can either use a battery filling device or regular bottled water to fill your batteries. Fill your batteries with distilled water, make sure the fluid has reached the full level and put the lids sealed firmly back on each cell.

You do not want to overflow the battery fluid because it can lead to a mess in your battery boxes and cause a safety hazard.
