What should a contractor do to position himself well for the new year?

Look at your backlog. Bid work and stockpile as much work as you can.

Take advantage of the wet season. Do some PR work. Build relationships. Go around and visit GC's. Get prequalified with GC's you want to work with.

You want to get to the point where you can bid work and manage your company, and have good employees putting jobs in and making you money. It takes time to get to that point. Make sure you honor your obligations, but be honest with your employer if you end up in a bind.

Perform maintenance and upkeep on your equipment. If your equipment is broke down, then you're broke down.

Use your off time to improve your estimating and job bidding. Improve your business. Work on your website. Work on your marketing.
