The squishy lifters will not allow oil pressure to build up and push down on the cam lobe. It leaves a gap between the valve and the lifter, and your left with a ticking sound. I haven't watched this since I uploaded it. I must have been tired. I was after two weeks of 95 degrees heat wave and i was doing this after work. The information is half correct. the stiff ones are good, the sticky ones are leaking. After cleaning the valves, it no longer chattered and has been quiet since. synthetic oil was used and changed often to keep it clean. I recommend cleaning only if you are bored. its better to replace them all.

So i was replacing a broken timing belt, and decided, lets pull all the hydraulic lash adjusters and clean them.
This Miata has 200k miles, the previous owner wasnt always on time with oil change intervals.

I recommend using the thinnest and highest quality oil you can get away with and the best filter after doing this procedure. along with keeping the car in a good state of tune (good o2 sensor, plugs, wires, MAF, CTS, driving longer than 1520 minutes occasionally ect) This will ensure long lifter life. the thinner oil with high detergents will keep the lifters clean and less wear on startup.
