Hey everyone, welcome to FidQs. The place where we answer your top Fidelity customer questions...
...as quickly and simply as humanly possible.
Today’s question is…how do I find my dividends and reinvest them at Fidelity?
Excellent question, but first, for any of you lovely folks who need a refresher on dividends, I’ve got just the thing.
Um, sorry…wrong graphic…that was…well… a different time in my life.
Ah yes…here’s the one.
Dividends are a distribution of a portion of a company's earnings, decided by the board of directors, to a class of its shareholders.
Ok so now that we’ve got that out of the way… it’s time to talk about how you can see what you’re earning in dividends at Fidelity.
So for starters, after signing into your account, go to “accounts & trade” and select “portfolio”.
From there, just choose an account on the left and select “activities and orders” at the top.
Then all that’s left to do is choose how far back you want to go...
...then under “more filters” select “dividends/interest” and apply filters.
And there you have it...now you can see all of your dividends....
And I don’t know about you, but I could look at them all day...
But I won’t because it’s now time to talk about reinvesting...
And if you’re not too sure on what that is, let me explain:
I really love shoes. I mean, I’ve got twenty pairs of mint condition sneakers in my closet sitting pretty right now.
So given my deep adoration for footwear, let’s say I own stock in a wellknown shoe company. And that company pays a yearly dividend payment of $240. I could then use that money to reinvest AKA buy more shares which could in turn, potentially grow my money over time.
Now that you’ve learned a little bit more about reinvesting...and my shoe obsession...let’s walk through how to set it all up.
Under “accounts & trade” select “account features”.
Now about halfway down under brokerage and trading you’ll get to “dividends and capital gains”
Click manage…and you’ll see all the investments from all the accounts you own that currently receive dividends.
See how this one says “deposit to core account”? That means you aren’t currently reinvesting, but instead, that cash is just sitting there until you make a move.
So, what do you say? Want to make a move? Let’s do it!
To reinvest, just click “update”...
...then toggle to “reinvest security”, choose how you’d like to apply it, then select update. And you’re all set. Done and done.
But I’ve got just one last very important question for you...
Wouldn’t it be great if you could actually see when you receive these dividends?
Well gosh darn it…there is a way and I’m gonna show you.
Just go to “news and research” and select alerts.
Click account events and services,
check the box for mutual fund/equity distributions and click set up/ select alerts.
Then just choose if you’d like to get an email notification or text and you’re all set.
Alright that’s it for today.
And just to recap, a few things that we learned were…how to find your dividends on Fidelity.com, how to reinvest them and what great taste I have in footwear.
