Welcome to another amazing video from Paddy's DIY

In this video I'm going to show how to detect a wall stud using a Magnet.

A stud partition wall is a non load bearing wall, used to divide open spaces in to rooms. In Ireland and the UK stud partition walls are constructed using 4 inch x 2 Inch timbers spaced at 400mm or 16 inch spacings. Next sheets of plasterboard or Dry wall are screwed to the studs. The joints are taped with scrim tape and then the whole wall is plastered. It is the screws that are going to tell me the location of the studs.

For this hack to work you will need a strong magnet. The magnet i use in the video is a neodymium magnet that has over 30kg pull force. A regular magnet will work but it will need to be strong.

This is the link to where i bought my magnet from amazon.

The standard stud spacing is 400mm or 16”. Now this will all depend on the builder or carpenter at the time the house was built. There are also wider spacings used eg. 600mm. Also if your wall is non divisible by 400mm, there will be a smaller stud spacing located somewhere in the wall. So the easiest thing to try first is to measure out 400mm or 16 inches from an adjacent solid block wall or door frame, and move the magnet over this location. Also you can not bother with measuring and just pass the magnet back and forth an down over the wall until you feel the magnet pull.

When you feel the magnet pull to a screw, continue down or up the height of the wall and mark the locations where you feel the strongest pull. Use masking tape to mark the locations so you don't mark the wall. You will now be able to see a straight line of where your stud is.

With this method we are assuming the the screws are positioned in the center of the timber stud. The stud timber will be 2 inches wide so, you should be fine if you follow the center of the markings.

WARNING
This method will not tell you the location of copper or plastic pipe, or electrical cable. SO BE CAREFUL. If you are particularly worried or need to know for sure you can buy a detector like the one in the Link below. This is basically a metal detector, which will tell you the location of ferrous and non ferrous metals.
