To prepare for a bunch of grass fed and finished beef from a local farm, we had to make room for it in our old upright standing freezer. We had a thick ice build up that had to be removed! The problem is that it is still winter and the outside temperatures were not cooperating.
Common questions about getting rid of ice from a freezer are: " Can I chip the ice from my freezer?", or " Can I use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt the ice in my freezer?" . The short answer is no
danger!
The video goes into to what you should do even in cold temps to safely defrost the freezer!
So we used heat transfer from water to raise the interior temperatures of the freezer so that the ice build up inside the freezer could melt. Warmer exterior temperatures would help thaw the ice build up in the freezer, but even when it was 40 degrees F outside, we were still able to melt the ice.
