Curling hair with a flat iron seems very easy (once you know the techniques), but it is still one of the biggest questions asked How do I curls my hair with a flat iron? So I wanted to create a video that goes through many curling techniques and hair curling fundamentals.

I hope this video will make hair styling a much more enjoyable process. I wanted to go through the simple hand moves and twists that create a world of difference when styling and/or curling the hair using a hair straightener. Let's begin with our how to curls hair with flat iron techniques:

1st Technique: How to twist the flat iron
It is important to understand which way you want the flat iron to create the hair curls: curls toward the face or curls away from the face. Curls that are away from the face open the facial features. Old hollywood glam type of waves are always toward the face. Of course you can alternate them to create that volume and dimension in the hair. It is up to you what you wan to do. I would play with both types of hair curls and see which way you like it more.

2nd Technique: How to hold the Flat Iron
This is where most people get confused. How to exactly hold the flat iron to create those effortless looking hair curls and/or waves. Let's go move by move and see if we can make it a bit easier to understand:
a. Holding and pulling the flat iron downward more vertically will give you loose waves. The more vertical and downward the motion, the more loose the wave will be.
b. While holding and then pulling the flat iron more horizontally will give you tighter hair curls.
c. Holding the flat iron vertically and pointing upward will provide curls that resemble a curling wand. You will notice that the hair curls are more voluminous with this method.
d. The next technique is no twist method. Hold the flat iron vertically, wrap the hair around it once and then inside the flat iron plates plates, clamp and pull down. This is the easiest method. However, the curls will be lower on the hair. So this is a great hair curling method for those with long hair.

3rd Technique: The bend method
In this method we are going for those stype of waves. There is a lot of twisting with this method. This method will require a lot of practice before getting good results. You will have to twist the flat iron one way and then opposite way as you go dow the hair. As you get more practice you will notice that your curls will look more consistent.

4th The Press Method
This method is very easy because there is no twisting involved. You create a pattern you want and then press the pattern inside the flat iron to create har curls. However, this is the most time consuming of all the methods. You can get very creative with this method, for instance twisting hair around chop sticks and then pressing it inside the flat iron will give you very unique looking hair curls. Or you can do pin up hair curls... There is no end to what you can create with this method. Have fun with this one.
