Cleaning a crawlspace is nasty work, there's all kinds of trash, debris, dead animals, live animals, but most of the time it's discarded construction debris. In this video taken under a 1930's twostory bungalow in Orlando, Florida, the previous construction contractors used the crawlspace as a dumping ground basically as their trash pile instead of throwing it in the dumpster. In order to lay a vapor barrier (aka vapor retarder) down, there cannot be any organic matter, trash, or sharp debris, so the crawlspace has to be cleaned first. Here we clean by hand, with rakes, shovels, and small buckets. ALWAYS wear a respirator, head lamp, and helmet to keep from hitting your head on the floor joists above.
