How to Calculate Carbohydrates in Cat Food: You NEED This Knowledge!

Follow
Wildernesscat

You have to know how much carbohydrate matter is in your cat's food, but you won't find this vital information on the label.

Until carbohydrate matter appears on the back of cat food packages, it's our responsibility to find these percentages ourselves.

You can either use a carbohydrate calculator, get the typical nutrient analysis from the company, or calculate the carbohydrate content using a simple formula.

RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO:

Cat Food Carbohydrate Calculator: http://fnae.org/carbcalorie.html
Dry Matter Basis Calculator: http://fnae.org/dmb.html
Lisa Pierson's Sortable Cat Food Database (circa 2013, some or all nutritional data may be inaccurate): https://catinfo.org/docs/SortableCatF...

FORMULA FOR FINDING CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT:

1. Add together protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and ash
2. Subtract the sum of the above from 100% to find asfed carbohydrate percentage
3. Add together all nonmetabolizable content (fiber, moisture, and ash)
4. Subtract the result from 100% to find the metabolizable percentage of the product
5. Divide asfed carbohydrate percentage by the above value

If you don't have ash, you can estimate. Most dry foods are around 7% ash, while most wet foods are about 3% ash.
