How to Build a Solar Panel with Transistors. Few people know that a transistor can generate a small amount of electrical current when placed in sunlight. I wanted to take this very far and see what would happen if I assembled an array of 45 transistors by also using sun reflectors to focus additional sunlight onto the transistors. In order for the panel to generate it's maximum power, it needs to be installed on a solar tracker so the sunlight can hit the transistors head on at all times. The transistors I chose are standard 2N3055. Other transistors can produce more or less energy depending on the size and power rating. The end result is we can definitely power small loads with it and also charge a battery that can in turn power greater loads like charging a cellphone, powering lights, or running a DC motor. However, a smaller solar panel can produce more energy.
