How Parasites Move: Toxoplasma gondii

Following our previous post on Prof. Han’s publication on quantitatively comparing healthy and tachyzoiteinfected cells using HT, here is a beautiful timelapse video of Toxoplasma gondii captured using our HT microscope.
Using the fast acquisition speed of holotomography (150 fps for 2D and 2.5 fps for 2D+3D holotomography), we were able to image the rapid, dynamic movement of these apicomplexan parasites.
Never done before, holotomography allows researchers to not only observe the interactions of cells in 3D, but also quantitatively analyze biophysical characteristics using just the sample’s refractive index (RI), an intrinsic optical parameters of all objects. This removes the need for any harmful exogenous reagents and timeconsuming sample preparation which may affect the cells' behavior.
