▶Introduction
Multistage centrifugal pumps are used to increase the pressure of a pumped fluid without reducing the flow. This type of pump often utilises multiple diffuser casings, but can also use multiple volute casings (less common).

Operation
The pumped fluid is drawn into the impeller eye of the first stage impeller, it is then discharged and fed to the next impeller eye, and the process is repeated until the fluid has passed through all impellers. Each impeller is referred to as a ‘stage’. A five stage pump is a pump with five impellers.

Components
The centrifugal pump consists of:

Wear rings
Compression packing or a mechanical seal
Impeller
Volute casing or diffuser
Lantern ring (for compression packing only)

Centrifugal pump Designs and Classifications

Centrifugal pumps are classified based upon the impeller used, or flow type.

Impeller types are fully enclosed, semiclosed (or partially open) and open.

Flow types are radial, axial and mixed.
