Traveling To India? Learn About Gold Jewelry Allowance & Customs Regulation
As per the latest Indian customs regulation, a male passenger can carry up to 20 grams gold jewelry dutyfree into the country, provided that it has a maximum value of Rs. 50,000. On the other hand, if you are a female passenger, your dutyfree gold limit is 40 grams, with a maximum worth of Rs. 100,000. These rules also apply to children, as long as they have been
living abroad for longer than a year. if a passanger bringing in gold has not stayed abroad for more than six months, then the duty on gold will be charged @38.5% on all the gold he/ she arrives with.

CONDITIONS FOR CARRYING GOLD TO INDIA AS A DUTYFREE ALLOWANCE

1. The passanger should have stayed abroad for more than one year;

2. The maxiumum dutyfree allowance is Rs 50,000 for (men) and Rs 100,000 for (women). These rules also apply to children, as long as they have been living abroad for longer than a year.

3. The dutyfree allowance in India is ONLY for gold jewelry and NOT for gold coins, bars or biscuits.

4. The dutyfree allowance is ONLY for plain gold jewelry and does not include studded gems or diamond jewelry or any other form of gold.

Also, if you are planning on bringing other forms of gold into India, you may have to pay duties on it. If you are taking gold in any form other than jewelry, declare it! Also, if you are carrying gold beyond the dutyfree allowance limit, declare It! Concealment of gold jewelry in baggage or no declaration will lead to confiscation, fines/ penalty and other complications. So if you carry gold above the standard duty free allowace YOU MUST DECLARE IT!

PAYMENT OF CUSTOMS DUTY

Gold ornaments that are brought into the country that exceed these limits will be subject to a 13.75% customs duty. To pay custom duty at a discounted rate, it is better to carry foreign currency or U.S. Dollars. If custom duty is paid in Indian Rupees, the custom duty applicable is 13.75%.

GOLD JEWELRY EACH PASSENGER CAN CARRY:

Each passenger can carry up to 1 kg (kilogram) of gold jewelry upon payment of customs duty, provided the passenger has stayed abroad for atleast a year or more. Also, Indian customs will not allow more than 1 kg of gold jewelry even if the passenger is willing to pay the customs duty for it.
