How Edges Make or Break Your Painting

Follow
Ian Roberts

Although we often think in terms of lines if we draw something, when we paint we are laying in masses. Those lines then become edges. The lines we might draw are really just the edges of masses that are a different value, or color, or texture than the thing next to it. So when we paint we have to orchestrate those edges to work for us rather than against us.

Our eye responds to contrast. The greater the contrast, the greater the attraction. So strong edges pull more attention than soft edges. In this video I suggest thinking of a edge scale, like a value scale, of hard to soft. This gives us, conceptually a better understanding of the effect of edges on our painting.
