Marseille has long held its unhappy reputation as one of Europe's crime capitals.

But a record 49 drugrelated murders last year, fuelled by a brutal turfwar between rival gangs, has taken the violence to a new level.

While French authorities struggle to get a grip many of those caught up in it say acute social deprivation is to blame.

We were granted rare access to a gang in the city's notorious northern quarters.
