Hot Dog Stew - Depression Era Recipe - Hoover Stew Recipes - Budget Meal - $1 Meal - Hard Times

This is a recipe for Hot Dog Stew. It is a variation of Hoover Stew which was a very popular recipe during the Great Depression. It is easy to make and inexpensive also. It's a great way to stretch meat. Two hotdogs can feed four people when you add beans and pasta. Four people can eat for $1 or less each. We used a big can of baked beans and a half of a box of elbow macaroni. Buy pasta and beans when they are on sale and stock up. Pasta can be purchased for less than a dollar a box. We usually buy big cans of beans when they are $1.50 or less. Aldi and Lidl have great prices on canned beans. Hot Dogs can also be purchased for $1.00 or less for a package of 8. Or you can splurge and buy hot dogs that are a little healthier and cost a little more. If we spent $4.00 on a package of 8 hotdogs, we only used $1.00 worth of hotdogs in this meal.

1/2 box pasta = $0.44
large can of baked beans = $1.49
onion and pepper = $1.00 (or free from our garden)
hot dogs = $1.00 (or much less if you buy cheaper hotdogs)
TOTAL = $3.93 for 4 servings
