Soundoracle.net Week four of our “Fundamental Series” is an depth discussion on the fundamental frequencies of hihats. Understanding these fundamental frequencies can be a key factor in bettering your engineer skills.

A properly EQ’d hihat can bring sparkle & energy to any mix. The hihat is a very important component that adds to the groove of most music. This may seem like a fairly easy instrument to EQ. It may be tempting to overlook & ignore when mixing a song; however, there are some techniques to consider when EQing a hihat.

In this video, we discuss a detailed analysis of the fundamental frequencies of a hihat. We talk about & demonstrate what specific boosted frequencies will help a hihat cut through the mix without clashing with the rest of the music. We also examine different frequencies that should be cut to avoid harshness throughout your mix.

In this video, we show examples of different types of hihats such as, electronic “trap” sounding hihats, filtered, acoustic, & soft hihats. We will go over acoustic & digital open hihats. We also touch base on cymbals & overheads as well.

As with any aspect of music, the type of hihat & song vary with frequencies; however, these key elements will point you in the right direction of a great sounding hihat. Your listeners & fans will appreciate the energy these techniques bring to your hihat without getting lost in the mix or worse, hurting their ears.

Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael gives you a stepbystep guide on choosing the right frequencies to boost & cut for a hihat.
