A new church has since been built.
The Historic Place Category 2 heritage building, opened in 1889, sustained major damage in the Canterbury earthquakes and has been shut since 2011.Opihi Parish finance chairman Mark Robins said the parish hoped to rebuild a church on the neighbouring tennis courts at a cost of more than $1 million.
