(EN) 22/01/2023. When fighting with a longtailed macaque, a proboscis monkey fell off in the river. Proboscis monkey are excellent swimmers, but this one was in trouble… May be injured? And boats on the river became to be a threat for him. I decided to help him. The first plan was only to protect him from other boats using our own speedboat, but as the monkey was still swimming in circles, in the middle of the river, i decided to make it quicker. Yes I had to grab her tail (its a female) to secure her neck... and she had to experience 2 seconds under water... :( No proud of it :((( In this situation, completely improvised, with no equipment or cage, its crucial to be quick, to minimize the stress of the animal. It’s necessary to be a little hard when handling the animal, to avoid any bite. At the end the proboscis monkey only spent one minute on the boat before going back to the jungle and to her group, far from humans… and far from the macaque who attacked him. Her group was not trying to cross the river. the way i released her was only to make it quicker (Proboscis monkey are used to much more extrem jump), and it was very complicated to get down the boat etc...
