Filmmaker Heather Haunani Giugni was honored as the 2023 Kama‘āina of the Year™ on May 13, 2023 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, in recognition of her achievements in establishing ‘Ulu‘ulu: The Henry Ku‘ualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawai‘i and her impact in preserving and sharing the rich moving image heritage of Hawai‘i through the preservation of film and videotape. These and other efforts help relay the stories and perpetuate the history and culture of Native Hawaiians and the people of Hawai‘i.
