Murphy stars as Reb Kittridge, a stray hired gun hired to get the title deeds to the last remaining ranch not owned by local boss Matt Telford. The owner of the last ranch is Dan Saxon. Although Reb has yet to accept the job, she is ambushed by the rancher Curly Mather, who kills Saxon's horse. Arriving in town, he is challenged by Saxon to a gunfight, but instead shoots Saxon in the hand of his gun instead of a lethal shot.

Saxon, an established former wild outlaw, senses that Reb has good in him, and when he hears that Reb's purpose in life is to have his own farm, he loses the title to the farm to Reb in a card draw. It is clear that he did this on purpose, as he had won a similar competition before, outstripping his opponent's king.

Reb takes over the farm and transports the cattle herd to a railroad to be sold to the workers. Telford recruits Reb's gunslinger, and sometimes friend Johnny Lake, to stop the herd and Reb. Reb also fell in love with Rita, the farm owner's daughter, who is now in love with Mather.[2]
