Golden-ringed Dragonfly Defends His Territory over a Montane Pond

Follow
sigma1920HD

A male of Goldenringed dragonfly (aka Siebold's dragonfly; Anotogaster sieboldii, family Cordulegastridae) patrolling back and forth over a montane pond and a stream from it to defend his territory and wait for a female to mate with. Whenever another one came flying, he quickly intercepted and chased the rival male off. The hostile encounters (or air battles) were replayed at 3x slowmotion (twice @1:09 2:30 and 4:06 5:19). Captured with my old trailcam in the sunny afternoon (around 14:35 17:10 PM) of earlyAugust 2022 in Japan.

Why was the dragonfly repeatedly caught on trailcam in the first place? Insects are supposed to be coldblooded, which cannot trigger the motionsensor of the trailcam. I wonder if the body temperature of the flying giant dragonfly was in fact hotter than the ambient temperature. I would like to take a movie of them with a thermal camera someday.
