Candice Bruder brought her 8monthold Abyssinian kitten Razzperilla to compete from Long Island; Jung Hyun Ahn flew with her hairless sphynx kitten IU 18 hours from Sejong, South Korea; and Debra Duncan and her cat Odin Coffee, who is a rare Havana brown cat, drove all the way from Kalamazoo, Mich.“This show is just exceptional,” Duncan said. “I was told this was a nottomiss show, so we drove down 12½ hours. He’s my copilot, but he sucks as a navigator,” she added, grinning down at Odin in her arms. About 250 cats competed at the annual twoday event, held Nov. 4 and 5 at the Gas South Convention Center. While there are no breed standards for the household cats class, the rest — including ragdolls, Bengals and Norwegian forest cats — are evaluated by a panel of Cat Fanciers Association judges. The association is currently the world’s largest registry of pedigreed cats and has about 600 clubs around the world; Georgia’s Cotton States show is one of its largest and most competitive.“People come from all over the country and outside of the country to show cats” said C. A. Folds, vice president of the Cotton States Cat Club, whose first show in 1938 drew 118 cats. “We are famous for our decor every year, and we have a different theme every year.”This year’s theme was “Call of the Wild,” and each judging ring had been colorfully decorated by club members with flamingos and bears and giraffes. Folds herself owns show cats. “Three Persians, they’re all retired now. I don’t make them work anymore. I’m retired and they’re retired,” she said. A lot of the pedigreed cat owners go from show to show to collect points under three categories — kitten (4 to 8 months old), championship (whole, or unaltered cats) and premiership (altered, or spayed or neutered). These “grand points” can be collected over the life span of the show cat until it receives 200 points for its grand champion title. Casper, a Selkirk rex with white curled hair, made four finals at Cotton States. “You have to beat 200 cats or accumulate 200 points to get a grand champion title in CFA,” said Casper’s owner, Craig Thoele. “Fingers crossed,” he added. Also new to the showcat circuit was Mykkos, a 14monthold Persian awarded a grand champion title this year in his first year competing.“He’s my little cream puff,” said owner Sazan Powers, who’s been working in animal rescue for 12 years.“I always identified as a crazy animal lady. I love cats, I love birds, I have three dogs, also,” she said. “I feel like now I’m the crazy cat lady ever since I got my show cat. I’m grooming three hours a week. My husband makes fun of me because I have to food prep my cat’s food, but I don’t food prep my husband’s food.
