In this video I am talking about most common mechanical problems and defects on second generation GMC Terrain SUV from my own experience. I will mention all common problems I've encountered during the last couple of years while selling this vehicles ( 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | SLE | SLT | DENALI | 1.5L | 2.0L ).

1. Oil Leaks

I've recorded this video in 2023 so no major engine or transmission issues were identified at this point. Biggest problem I've seen are the oil leaks and almost every Terrain will be leaking from Upper Oil Pan or the Vacuum Pump. Upper oil pan leak can be a significant job on a 2.0L engine (around 15h) while only a few hours on a 1.5L engine. Definitely worth mentioning.

Vacuum Pump leak is a smaller job as pump is not too expensive and only few hours labor to replace it. Issue is if it is not replaced in time then pump can freeze up damaging vital engine parts. Main symptom is brake pedal going hard so definitely address it asap if you experience this problem.

2. Right Rear Tail Light

Right Rear Tail Light will leak water inside causing tail light to fail, actually LED component of the tail light will fail. Unfortunately it will have to be replaced. New OEM tail light will be around $500 and aftermarket around $250.

3. Power Door Locks

On some vehicles power door locks will stop working and you will not be able to lock the vehicle. Fix is the software update by the GM dealer.

4. Display & Rear View Camera

Very often Display will freeze up or go black. Fix is again software update performed by the GM dealer.

Rear View Camera failing is often caused by a faulty camera module which will have to be replaced.

5. Wheel Speed Sensors / ABS Sensors

Second generation Terrains seem to have unusual amount of problems with front abs sensors. Easy to replace and fix, but still worth mentioning.

This are problems I have personally encountered with this vehicles. Nothing really too major to be honest, but they are only 5 years old at the time of making this video so there is still lots of time for future issues to emerge.

Comment / mention any problems you have.
