GM Ignition Switch Repair: Step-by-Step

Follow
C3 Corvette

In this video, I show you how I rebuilt a C3 Corvette ignition switch, which may also apply to many other GM and/or Chevrolet vehicles.

This switch is often confused with the key tumbler, but this is where all the magic takes place once you turn the key and the tumbler pushrod actuates the switch, from Start to Run, or from Off to Accessory.

GM ignition switches from the 1990s and back are pretty similar mechanically speaking, so this video may help DIYers other than C3 Corvette owners who need to repair theirs to get their vehicles back on the road.

Having said that, these switches are not expensive, and sometimes it is advisable to get a new replacement part, install it, and be done with it.

However, oftentimes replacement components are not as good as those made here in the ol' US of A and you end up taking a chance with a part that may fail sooner rather than decades later.

Repairing or rebuilding one of these ignition switches is not difficult as long as all the parts are there and the assembly is in good overall condition. And it's very rewarding to refurbish something with your own hands knowing that the job was done right.

Besides, I never understood the concept of just "throwing something away." Maybe someone will explain to me at some point where this "away" place is. Anyway, if you can fix and reuse an original component, do it!

I hope you find the video helpful if you decide to repair your car's ignition switch.

Thank you for watching!
