Giardiasis is a common enteric infection caused by the protozoan Giardia lamblia (also known as G. duodenalis or G. intestinalis). Transmission usually occurs via the faecaloral route when travelling and is characterised by gastrointestinal symptoms (eg. diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, greasy stools, bloating, nausea, vomiting and weight loss). However, 50% of infections are asymptomatic.
