8. Haast’s Eagle
Known in Maori legend as the Pouakai, Haast’s eagle was endemic to New Zealand and went extinct relatively recently, between 500 and 600 years ago. Even today’s largest birds of prey are small compared to the Haast’s eagle. Modern species such as the Philippine, wedgetailed, and harpy eagle typically have a wingspan of around seven feet (2.13 m) and weigh around 15 pounds (6.7 kg).

7. Megatherium
The megatherium was the largest genus of ground sloth, and one of the biggest land mammals, to ever exist. In 2010, a geologist with the Brazilian Geological Survey went to investigate rumors of some massive tunnels and caves in the state of Rondonia. When he arrived, he realized that these caves were not created by water as previously thought, it didn’t look natural. Other geologists in Brazil started investigating similar caves.

6. Meganeura
Meganeura was a prehistoric genus of insects related to the modern dragonfly that lived around 300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. These bugs existed long before the dinosaurs, dominating the earth for millions of years alongside other large insects, and thrived in humid wetlands.

5. Terror Birds
Phorusrhacidae, more commonly known as terror birds, are an extinct group of huge, carnivorous, flightless birds. They lived between 62 to 1.8 million years ago, during the Cenozoic era. During that time, terror birds were the largest species of apex predator in what is now South America.

4. Pulmonoscorpius
Pulmonoscorpius translates to “breathing or lung scorpion.” This gigantic creature lived between 330 and 345 million years ago, during the Visean epoch of the Carboniferous Age. However dangerous they may be, today’s scorpions are typically quite small in size. In contrast, Pulmonoscorpius grew up to 30 inches long (76 cm). The scorpion had abnormally big eyes, indicating the likelihood of good vision.

3. Archelon
Archelon is the largestever documented turtle. It lived in the northern US during the Late Cretaceous epoch, sometime between 100.5 and 66 million years ago. This marine turtle far outsized even today’s biggest species. The largest known specimen measured 15 feet (4.57 meters) from head to tail and 13 feet (3.95 meters) from flipper to flipper. It weighed 4,900 pounds (2,200 kg).

2. Josephoartigasia Monesi
The capybara is the largest living rodent, weighing up to 146 pounds (66 kg). Josephoartigasia monesi, also known as the giant pacarana, was much larger. In fact, it was the largest rodent ever to exist and resembled something out of a horror movie. This extinct South American species lived between two and four million years ago, during the Pliocene and Pleistocene eras, and may have weighed up to a ton (2,000 lb).

1. American Lion
The African lion is the secondlargest cat in the world, with males sometimes exceeding 550 pounds (250 kg). Between 340,000 and 11,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, an even bigger lion existed throughout the savannahs and grasslands of North America. Panthera atrox, also known as the American lion, was one of the largest known big cats to ever exist.
