Valves are used to control the flow of liquids and gases. One clear difference in these valves is their operating principle.

A ball valve uses a rotating ball with a bore and a spindle. Turning the handle, the ball rotates and closes or opens the valve. The valve is open when the lever is parallel
to the pipe and closed when the lever is perpendicular to the pipe.

A gate valve uses a gate to control the flow of media.
The gate is connected to a spindle. Turning this spindle lifts the gate and opens
the valve.

For certain applications, these valves can be used interchangeably.
However, there are some key advantages and disadvantages to each valve.

I will help you decide what valve you need for your application.
A ball valve can close or open quicker than a gate valve.
This can be an advantage, however, a quick closing can cause water hammer which is undesirable.

For visual indication, if the valve is open or closed, a ball valve is better due to the handle being either perpendicular or parallel to the line.

For a smaller installation space, a gate valve is preferred.

A gate valve is often a cheaper solution than a ball valve with the same specifications.
However, a ball valve is often more durable and requires less maintenance. Thus, over the long term, a ball valve can be a better choice.

A ball valve is better suited for smaller pipe sizes under 2" and a gate valve is better suited for pipe sizes over 2". For this reason, a gate valve is often recommended
for highflow applications.

A ball valve provides a good reliable seal. Therefore, ball valves are the better choice
for natural gas applications where a good seal is important in the long run.
