From Bad to Worse: Our EKKO Nightmare in Newfoundland

Follow
VAN TREKKING lifestyle

You've heard the saying, you get what you pay for. It seems lately that's just not the case. We'll share with you how our Winnebago Ekko's poor design using inferior parts and lack of factory quality control coupled with a slow company response to the issue led to us almost, almost burning down our Ekko while on what had been up to that point an epic RV/Van/Road Trip to Newfoundland.

Sorry if we're whining in this one but COME ON WINNEBAGO! We're starting to think we need to rename our Ekko from Ocho to RECALL! One such recall that came back to bite us on our epic trip to Newfoundland was the infamous 174 recall, where the 2nd alternator or Balmar stops working and sometimes catches on fire. We were seconds away from literally burning down our van when it failed in Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland. So this one has a lot of what happened... a lot of whining and complaining... and us trying to make the most of it while deciding on what this will do to our planned month on the island.

We know many of you watch us when deciding whether or not you should get an Ekko... we love our Ekko but our ownership of this, our 8th RV, has been nothing but trying to make the best of a very poorly designed and built RV. And at this point if you ask us, we'd say it might be best to steer away from buying any new Winnebago since it appears shareholder stock price and profits are much more important than customer safety and satisfaction. The sad thing is they're not alone in this as it seems almost all manufacturers are putting out RVs that are assembled with inferior parts in an assembly line fashion with little to no quality control. We'll be on the lookout for a better option and if you know of one that we should look into please let us know in the comments. Until then... Happy Tails!
