Fragile Existence is an upcoming scifi RTS which has base building both on and above planets with fleet survival mechanics straight out of Battlestar Galactica TV show. Your ragtag fleet of warships and transports carries the only humans left after an alien armada destroyed Earth and its colonies, while your wouldbe exterminators are hot on your trail.

The latest development update gave us a much more detailed look at how your fleet travels through the galaxy as well as between different planets of any solar system it enters. We also learned about the new features, volumetric effects and the warp sequence both of which upgrade the visual feel of the game, something the developer has done several times already.

The galaxy of Fragile Existence is home to a network of Warp Gates which create safe laneways through space for warping and going faster than light between two points. Warp travel without gates is also possible, but more hazardous. These gates will also help create more unique playthroughs as you will not be able to follow the same path and use the exact same Warp Gates when you start a new game.

These ships don’t have infinite sensor range but limited bubbles around them in which they can spot and identify debris or enemies. This means exploration is still fun and can surprise you with both loot and enemy ambushes. Too many space games give away to players almost infinite sight in space, depraving the gameplay of both extra, local, exploration and the possibility of being ambushed and so I think this is a very welcome addition to the gameplay in Fragile Existence.

On top of all that the developer has explained the whole system of managing supplies onboard ships, polling them in orbit and preparing for planetfall. It is from the orbit of the planet that these ships drop supplies and constructor units to a planet’s surface. It is only then that building an actual base begins with resource harvesting, refining, manufacturing and unit production spread between different buildings, each requiring some resources to construct and operate.

But that is not everything, as you can also build bases in space. Orbital bases to be more exact. This is almost like having the space and ground warfare of Star Wars: Empire at War combined into a single real time game with no turn based galaxy layer, but there is a tactical pause in Fragile Existence. Meaning you can give orders as time is frozen to manage all the different forces under your command.
