Today we travel old California State Route 30. Originally added to the State Highway System in 1933 as LRN 190, the entire route was unsigned until 1952 when California signed the portion from LRN 9 (US 66) in La Verne to Boulder Ave in Highland as part of SSR 30. In the meantime, another LRN was added LRN 207 running from 190 to LRN 43 (SSR 18) as a shortcut through the mountains to Big Bear Lake where LRN 43 took the north shore of the lake while LRN 207 took the southern shore. LRN 207 carried SSR 30 the entire way, ultimately ending in Big Bear Lake. In 1964, LRN 207 was cut back to Running Springs and LRN 42/SSR 18 (now just SR 18) took the road by itself. SR 18 was even shifted to the southern shore and SR 38 was extended to serve the northern shore of Big Bear Lake. At that point, the unsigned section of former LRN 190 was given a route number: SR 106.

In 1972, it became clear that there was a need for a freeway to serve the northern Inland Empire. The rapidly growing area was changing from citrus groves and vineyards into suburbia. Legislators mapped out a freeway running from La Verne to Redlands. Due to it's proximity to, and in some cases full on replacement of, SR 30, it was a nobrainer as to what they would number the freeway.

At that point, the remainder of what was LRN 207 from Highland to Running Springs was spun off into SR 330 and SR 106 was transferred legislatively to SR 30. Then came the freeway construction.

Started a year before the change actually, two stub freeways were constructed in 1971. The 'Crosstown Freeway' as it was dubbed by locals as it went ''Cross town', was completed in 1992. Running from SR 259 to I10, an extension to I215 was later added in the 1990's.

The street alignment of SR 30 in San Bernardino, Highland and Redlands ceased to exist entirely at that point with local authorities agreeing to take back ownership. These roads simply turned back to their original usage, albeit with more traffic and left over signs from a now bygone era.

SR 30 was legislatively gutted in 1998 when Caltrans transferred all of SR 30 to Route 210 with the intention of take I210 all the way to San Bernardino. It was still signed out in the field until 2007 when the final piece of the Foothill Freeway was completed and the SR 30 shields were replaced with SR 210 shields.
