The ruby seadragon isn’t a mythical creature, but like its cousins, the common and leafy seadragons, this rare fish looks like the stuff of fantasy. A relative of the seahorse, it was known only from preserved specimens for nearly a century. Analysis by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and the Western Australia Museum recently showed that the specimens formed a distinct species. But the animal still had never been filmed alive in its natural habitat. Now, members of the same team report that they have captured footage of theruby seadragon wellhidden in its deep habitat.
