"We are not told to know God but to love Him. I had a very good but rather stern father. He wasn't the nice, cuddly sort I could be close to. I often felt I disappointed him, was afraid of his disapproval and wasn't sure he loved me, so how could I possibly love God as a father figure? Since father died, I feel closer to him than I've ever been. I do believe in the saying, 'Tears wash the soul'."
