The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is a 6,000 acre park located in Antioch, California, which is 50 miles east of San Francisco. The park is under the administration of the East Bay Regional Park District since 1973, and the area contains relics of mining towns that mined coal and silica sand.

During the 19th century, Black Diamond Mines consists of mining towns of Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley, and Judsonville. The main purpose of the mines was for the abundance of coal underground that were used to power railroads, ships, and heavy industry throughout California. In the 1920's, highquality silica sandstone were mined to make glass. Today, the mines have been turned into a tourist attraction and a museum with the main visitor's center, a 950 foot long section entrance corridor called the Greathouse portal. Hiking trails surround the mines that stretches to Contra Loma Regional Park to the east and Mount Diablo to the south.

The Rose Hill Cemetery is located on a hillside north of the mines. It is the final resting place to over 200 residents between the Somersville and Nortonville townsites and is officially designated as a Protestant cemetery. The worldknown Ansel Adams photographed two Italian Cypress trees in the cemetery in 1960 and called the image "Poplars, Cemetery near Mount Diablo".
