A long anticipated journey to the amazing islands of Haida Gwaii off the British Columbia Coast.

3 weeks exploring the unique landscape and culture of one of Canada's best kept secrets. A rich marine biosphere surrounds an archipelago of primal forests and old growth trees. Haida Gwaii offers adventures on the land and sea and includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 'Sgang Gwaay'. The Haida people oversee these sensitive historical sites through the 'Watchmen' program that promotes respect and understanding of their ancestral heritage. There are 90 miles or 140 km of paved roads on the two main islands, referred to as Graham in the north and Moresby in the south. A local ferry connects these two main islands. Additionally, a network of forest service roads access more remote sectors. Arts and culture figure prominently in Haida life and the wonderful, Museum of Haida Culture in Skidegate, devotes itself to sharing this deep well of history and creativity. Gwaii Haanas is the National Park and marine conservation area in the southern third of the islands and is particularly noteworthy. In 1985, a coalition led by Haida elders & protesters at Windy Bay mandated an end to clear cut logging practices on Haida Gwaii and helped establish the Gwaii Haanas National Park and protection for their cultural sites. I visited Gwaii Haanas on a 4 day/3 night guided trip with Moresby Expeditions, which proved to be an awesome way to see the islands and visit the 5 significant watchmen sites, one of which 'Sgung Gawky' is a UNESCO world Heritage site. Many great hiking trails exist, including the Sleeping Beauty trail, Anvil trail, Golden Spruce trail, Rose Spit, Moresby Mountain & Pseuda trails to name a few. Haida Gwaii is accessible by ferry from Prince Rupert on the BC mainland or by plane into either Masset or Sandspit airports.
Mains towns include Masset, Port Clements, Tlell, Skidegate, Daajing Giids & Sandspit.
The highest point on Haida Gwaii is Moresby Mountain.
