This session featured two leaders and practitioners dedicated to creating more nurturing and safe communities for children and families: Dr. Wanda Boone and Kristie Stutler.
Dr. Boone is the CEO and founder of Together for Resilient Youth (TRY) in Durham, North Carolina. Founded in 1992, TRY is a coalition of coalitions working through a grassroots framework to prevent trauma and the challenges that occur when it occurs. Today, TRY is serving youth — particularly black and Latino youth — across North Carolina, as well as in several other states and internationally. Dr. Boone is a forerunner and recognized as an expert in the field of resilience, Adverse Childhood Experiences and traumainformed living.
Kristie Stutler is the vice president of Policy and Influence at Urban Strategies, Inc., a national nonprofit with more than 40 years of community planning and development experience. She worked with systeminvolved youth for nearly 20 years and for three years served as the lead on juvenile justice reform for the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice. As a result of this work, in two years, Kentucky DJJ saw a 42% reduction in the number of youth placed in their residential programming. She is an alumna of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Children and Family Fellowship.
