Esther, a Jewish orphan, lived with her cousin Mordecai in the capital city of Shushan. Through a series of providential events, Esther found herself thrust into the heart of power when she was chosen as one of the candidates to become the new queen of Persia. Esther’s beauty and grace captivated King Xerxes, and she was crowned queen, though she kept her Jewish identity concealed at Mordecai's counsel. Meanwhile, the villainous wicket Haman, the king's chief advisor, devised a wicked plot to annihilate the Jewish people throughout the empire. Mordecai urged Esther to use her position to intercede on behalf of her people, despite the risk to her own life. Esther called for her people to go on a threeday fasting and intercession.
