In this video, we take you through the exciting journey of converting a regular home basement living room and bedroom into a professionalgrade live room/control room recording studio. Follow along as we break down the stepbystep process that turned this space into an oasis for music and audio production.
00:00 Intro
00:51 Chapter 1 Live Room Wood Panelling
Our first mission was to create a warmer sounding room before adding conventional acoustic treatment within the live room. We achieved this by cladding the walls in pine tongue and groove boards minimizing the drywall surface area.
4:47 Chapter 2 Control Room Bass Trap and Acoustic Wall Framing, and Wood Panelling
We framed out all the bass traps and acoustic walls within the control room, leaving us with the remaining drywall surface area. We then clad that area with the pine boards to minimize drywall surface area within the control room. Leading to warmer room characteristics.
8:50 Chapter 3 Wood Conditioner, Stain, and Clear Coat on All Wood Cladding
To enhance the aesthetics of the room, we take all steps to properly stain all of the wood cladding in the clients choice of colour. The clear coat seals the wood and gives the final finish on the walls in each room.
12:16 Chapter 4 Custom Live Room Lighting
We install a track around the upper perimeter of the live room, allowing us to install our 50 foot LED light strip. We then diffuse the light, and add decorative trim to focus the light onto the walls, and hide all mounting points.
17:54 Chapter 5 Live Room Acoustics
We build the acoustic panels, and acoustic ceiling clouds to be ready for installation within the live room. The panels are designed to be modular, and can be positioned anywhere along the mounting track around the live room according to the clients recording preferences. We use our laser level to ensure the ceiling hardware is installed correctly.
27:33 Chapter 6 Control Room Insulation, Upholstery, and Trim
This step adds the absorption to the control room using acoustic insulation of varying densities. The fabric is then stapled to our frames, and wood trim installed to cover the staples. This provides a clean professional look to our control room.
38:16 Chapter 7 Custom Wall Plate and Wiring
This chapter shows how we made a mounting box for the clients custom input and output plate. This ensures the clients can plug any microphones, guitars, and other gear in the live room side, and have everything routed to behind the desk in the control room side. We stain everything to match the walls.
43:55 Chapter 8 Finishing Touches
We go around both rooms, doing any finishing touches to leave our client with a clean, professional grade recording studio. It is now ready for them to move all of their gear in, and start making music!
