Whether it is acrylic , gel or polygel application , this is how I do it . All steps are the same not matter what product you use to achieve nails that do not lift . Maybe you can take some tips on how I do it and apply them to your own prepping method .

Why are the natural nails trimmed off ?

There is no reason to cut the natural nail off if you are doing a
" Overlay " , ( Product Overlay ) on top of your natural nails . You obviously want your natural nails and all you are wanting is product on top to add to the strength of your natural nail . If someone is wanting long nail enhancements we trim the natural nails . If one is using glue on nail tips , trimming the nails short , helps to allow the plastic nail tip to adhere better to the nail plate . This also helps for proper placement of the paper nail forms too . Sometimes the natural nail has a natural cure downward when they get so long . Or curve in other ways that make proper placement of the tips and forms difficult . I have many videos of me applying nail forms with my natural nails being pretty long . I could get away with that for a while . Once my natural nail gets too long , the form placement is off and the artificial nail that I sculpt will look distorted , maybe crooked or pointing down or up too much . If you feel you can get away without cutting your natural nails and use forms and glue on tips , by all mean , do it and don't cut your natural nails .
