Eastern Buzzard Harassed by Two Jungle Crows

Follow
sigma1920HD

An Eastern Buzzard (Buteo japonicus, family Accipitridae) was found calling repeatedly on the top of a utility pole at the vast rice field. And then a juvenile of Jungle Crow (aka largebilled crow; Corvus macrorhynchos, family Corvidae) came flying and perched on the electric cable nearby. As you can see the replay at 5x slowmotion, the crow defecated soon after landing (@0:44). And the young jungle crow hopped between the adjacent cables as if challenging or provoking the eastern buzzard.

Although the juvenile flew away, an adult of Jungle Crow came flying instead and perched on the electric cable to harass the nemesis raptor silently. Eventually, the eastern buzzard could no longer put up with the psychological war (harassment or mobbing) against the crows and took flight toward the mountain. The jungle crows didn’t chase after the buzzard and the juvenile stayed on the perch of electric cable to preen itself triumphantly. Captured in the cloudy earlyafternoon (around 13:10 PM) of midJuly 2023 in Japan.
