Driver Behavior Safety Series: Fatigue

Follow
NatlSafetyCouncil

After battling traffic on your daily commute, you feel exhausted. Mental fatigue often is the result of a repetitive or monotonous task, such as a difficult drive in heavy traffic. The impact on safety can be catastrophic.

Your ability to recognize hazards and react quickly diminishes as you grow mentally fatigued. Fatigue also results from a lack of sleep, a key component of overall health and safety. You don’t allow a friend to drive drunk. But what if he or she is too tired to drive?

Thousands are injured or killed in drowsy driving crashes every year. It’s just as important to develop good sleep habits as it is to model safe driving behaviors. Adults need 79 hours of sleep to be on top of their game. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, get screened for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

Safe driving requires that you are alert and stay tuned in at all times.
