Landscape designer Terry Ryan of Cubic Yard Design transformed a small backyard with a cramped layout into a lush, gardenlover’s oasis. See how he maximized the space to create an incredible outdoor living area.
The backyard was originally segmented by a garage, which blocked the main part of the garden and resulted in overgrown greenery. Once removed, zones were created, including an outdoor dining spot with a carport that doubles as a protected area for rainy weather. One of the homeowners has a European heritage, which is incorporated into the garden’s aesthetic. Pea gravel and stone, similar to what you’d find in a European garden, are used throughout. The backyard includes a homegrown vegetable garden as well as diverse plants and flowers, requiring an investment in time and heart – perfect for an avid gardener.
