We setup and review the Dragonhawk Mast Racer wireless tattoo machine and talk you through it's features.

The Dragonhawk Mast Racer tattoo machine is a compact yet powerful penstyle rotary with an innovative battery and comfortable forward weighting.

Dragonhawk has created its first tattoo machine where the battery is contained within the machine grip, allowing for a shorter machine length of only 10 cm with a lower centre of gravity and no weight to drag it back while working. This form improves comfort and control, and reduces vibration massively.

Providing up to 5 hours of working time from just 1.5 hours of charge, the brushless direct drive motor in the Mast Racer has plenty of power to push its 4 mm stroke length, and includes a kickstart feature for larger cartridge configurations. It offers 412 V of power, and with the Ultra Power NoSnag motor, you’ll get incredible power without damaging skin.

The Mast Racer comes with a USBC powered charging base with LED lights to indicate battery level. All the components of the Mast Racer slot together with a satisfying click, with icons to help you line them up correctly.

The clear screen display shows voltage display and battery power level when it’s not charging, with a pedal symbol appearing while the machine is in use. There are three rubber buttons around the screen the power button, and arrow buttons to increase and decrease voltage.

The improved battery’s circuit board comes with short circuit, overcharge, and overdischarge protection for safer charging, and the high energy efficiency of the motor allows for safe heat dissipation.

This stubby tattoo machine is only 10 centimetres long, which might feel a bit strange at first but with a very low centre of gravity, no cables to pull it back, and massively reduced vibration, it’s comfortable to work with.

The battery itself provides between 4 and 12 Volts of power to the brushless, direct drive motor. It’s more than capable of pushing any size cartridge thanks to the kickstart feature, and comes with a fixed 4 millimetre stroke that’s perfect for lining and colour packing.

You’ll get around 56 hours of battery life from an hour and a half charge on the included battery dock. This neat little dock is puckshaped, fits perfectly onto your battery and charges via the USBC cable that comes included.

You can keep track of your battery level while it’s charging, with LEDs that indicate battery percentage in 20% increments, or charge the battery while it’s attached to the machine instead.

The machine’s circuit board is equipped with short circuit protection, overcharge and overdischarge protection, all of which will help to safeguard your machine while it charges.

Removing the battery from the machine is a little more complicated than with your traditional penstyle machines, but with indicators to help you line up your connections, it’s still simple enough to not cause any headaches.

In order to get the battery into the grip, Dragonhawk has placed the brushless motor above it, with the drive bar going straight through the middle of the battery itself.

With improved energy efficiency, upgraded heat dissipation and a smaller overall size, the motor – which is powered by Mcore technology, as are most of the company’s machines – easily pushes that 4 mm stroke.

All the buttons you’ll need to manage your machine are placed on the very top, above the motor. Framing a clear screen are three rubber buttons: one circular power button, which turns the machine on and off with a single click and activates jump start mode with a double click; and plus and minus buttons for adjustment of the voltage in 0.1 V increments.

The screen shows your current voltage and battery power levels as standard. When the machine is running, it displays a pedal symbol, and when jumpstart mode is activated, you’ll also see a lightning bolt symbol on the screen.

The Mast Racer’s grip is a comfortable 33 mm diameter, the machine itself weighs just 149 grams, and it is fully compatible with universal, Cheyennetype cartridges.

So now we’ve had a look at the Dragonhawk Mast Racer, what do you think of this innovative penstyle machine? Are you eager to try it out?
