During my trip to the dragstrip last month I just happened to be in the middle of the test drive period for a Root Auto Insurance quote. Since the app is like big brother always monitoring, I figured I might as well document how it factors in LEGAL racing. The test drive is tracked through the Root app and uses all the sensors built into the smartphone and requires some scary permissions. Once its setup, there's no escaping getting tracked short of completely powering down your phone. But I use my phone for other purposes during races, so that wasn't an option.

Normally, you'd assume drag racing, or any type of racing, would hurt your test drive score. But what I was doing here was completely legal on a dragstrip in competition. Since the app has to have location, surely it would know I was racing at a legal dragstrip and not just on the street, right? I honestly didn't know. Root doesn't exactly disclose all the ways it determines what data it picks up goes into the scoring.

That's what this video is about. We may not be able to see the inner workings, but we do see score updates and can determine from that if taking the app onto a dragstrip legally will negatively affect your Root Auto Insurance driving score needed to get a quote.

As an added bonus, I've included footage from after the test drive period and share my actual auto insurance rate quote and whether or not I made the switch to Root.
