The Airbus A340 is a longrange commercial airliner that was manufactured by Airbus, a European aerospace company. The A340 made its first flight in 1991 and was introduced into commercial service in 1993. It was designed as a longhaul aircraft, capable of flying extended distances, and was part of Airbus's effort to compete with other longrange aircraft like the Boeing 747. One notable characteristic of the A340 is its use of four engines. This was in contrast to the trend at the time, as many longhaul aircraft were transitioning to twinengine configurations for improved fuel efficiency. The fourengine setup provided the A340 with redundancy and enhanced performance, especially on long overwater routes. Over time, the A340 faced challenges in the market, particularly with the rise of more fuelefficient twinengine aircraft like the Boeing 777 and the Airbus A330. As a result, production of the A340 was discontinued in 2011. Airlines gradually retired the A340 from their fleets, replacing them with newer, more fuelefficient models.
