Donna and Michael Guyton's journey with their son Patrick is a testament to resilience, unwavering love, and tireless advocacy. At the age of four, Patrick Guyton contracted viral encephalitis from a mosquito bite which left him with profound disabilities, including blindness and a seizure disorder. Donna and Michael dedicated themselves to his care, with Donna eventually resigning from her position as a nursing instructor to provide aroundtheclock care.

Through countless hours of therapy and medical interventions, Patrick led an active life, thanks in part to the support received through TennCare's Home and Community Based 1915(c) DIDD waiver program, which allowed him to remain at home and be involved in his community. As part of her commitment to Patrick’s wellbeing, Donna quickly became a fierce advocate for families just like theirs. She played a pivotal role in passing legislation to establish a Committee on Pediatric Emergency Care in Tennessee, ensuring that children's emergency care needs were properly addressed.

When TJC first opened our doors in 1996, the Guyton family was one of our very first clients, and since then, they have continued to fight tirelessly for policy changes and legal reforms to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all.

Patrick's passing in July 2023 marked a profound loss for the Guyton family, but his legacy continues to inspire them to continue their advocacy. Donna's dedication persisted as she continued to fight for justice, serving as the first witness called in the A.M.C. v. Smith trial just a few months after Patrick passed. TJC is proud to honor Mrs. Donna Guyton as a 2024 Mother of the Year for her advocacy on behalf of Patrick and families across the state.
